Everything You Need to Know About Gummy Molds

Gummy Molds Are a Critical Component of Gummy Vitamin Manufacturing

Gummy molds are an essential component of the gummy manufacturing process. While it might seem like a mundane piece of tooling, a commercial-grade mold can make a significant difference in batch quality and consistency.

Today, we’re going to cover everything you need to know about gummy molds. If you want some further background on gummy pharmaceutical manufacturing, you should also check out some of our other resources like:

Now that you’re well-read on essential topics related to gummy pharmaceuticals, let’s focus in on gummy molds:

What Are Gummy Molds Used For?

Gummy molds serve a rather straightforward purpose. They aid in shaping a gummy vitamin into its intended form as it cools and solidifies. A mold is designed to restrict the movement of the product while it is still in its soft, liquid-like slurry state.

Do I Need Molds to Make Gummies?

Yes. Molds are an absolutely essential piece of equipment for manufacturing individual gummies. Without a professional-grade mold, the slurry cannot be properly separated. Instead, you wind up with a large, gelatinous blob that can easily stick to other surfaces.

What Are Gummy Molds Made Out Of?

There are two main types of gummy molds and they each excel in different areas.

  1. Silicone Molds

Silicone is a flexible material can be easily shaped and remain both solid and flexible enough across a wide range of temperatures during the manufacturing process. It is recommended that you purchase commercial-grade silicone molds to ensure they are of the proper thickness and toughness to withstand repeated use. Sililcone molds are generally used with a manual depositing system.

  1. Teflon Coated Aluminum Molds

Aluminum molds with a teflon coating is the new standard for automatic gummy depositing molds. Compared to the old method of stamping mold cavities into large trays of starch, there are less steps, and less cleaning when using teflon coated aluminum molds which results in greater produciton and more affordable equipment.

What Shapes Do Gummy Molds Come In?

You can purchase gummy molds in standard shapes like fruit shapes, teardrops, gumdrops, bears, and geometric shapes. However, many commercial-grade suppliers can also create custom shapes for you as well. If you have a licensing agreement to manufacture gummy vitamins in the shapes of trademarked characters or symbols, you should not encounter any difficulty having molds made to emulate these images.

How Do You Prevent Gummies from Sticking to the Molds?

Commercial-grade gummy molds arecoated with Teflon to add an inherent resistance to sticking. Before depositing the slurry into the molds to cool down and dry, the molds should be chilled and sprayed with a food-safe oil such as MCT or sunflower to add further slickness.

How Do You Clean Gummy Molds?

A gummy mold can be cleaned in a commercial dishwasher or by hand with dish detergent. Be sure to use a gentle setting on the washer to preserve the integrity of the mold for as long as possible.

Get Custom Gummy Molds for Your Own Operations

Are you looking for professional-grade gummy molds for your pharmaceutical manufacturing operations? At CapPlus, we offer custom gummy molds that can be used on any of our gummy production models.

Ordering your own custom molds is easy. Here’s how it works:

  1. Send us a concept design for your gummy shape. This can be in the form of a drawing, digital illustration, or a physical gummy sample. Be sure to also provide the desired finished gummy weight as well as your machine’s make and model.
  2. We will render a digital drawing of your product mold and send it to you. This can be revised until you have approved the final design.
  3. After you’ve greenlit the design, we’ll send you a quote on the costs to manufacture the mold.
  4. Once we’ve received your 50% deposit, we will start fabricating the mold for you. This process will take approximately 4-6 weeks. Once ready, send the second half of your payment and we’ll ship your molds to you!
