What Are Nicotine Gummies?

Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Shouldn’t Miss Out On this Quit Smoking Product

Nicotine gummies are a smoking cessation aid designed to help people consume a small dose of nicotine without tobacco and other chemicals found in cigarettes. Instead, when the person feels a craving, they can eat a tasty gummy that will help subside the cravings for a time.

Prior to gummy pharmaceuticals becoming a popular consumer product, many who desired to quit smoking would turn to other solutions like nicotine gum, patches, and electronic smoking devices. While these have helped many move away from cigarette smoking, they do not always provide the taste and convenience that a gummy can.

Today, we’re going to discuss the value of nicotine gummy supplements in the consumer market. First, let’s cover some statistics:

Smoking Cessations Solutions are in Major Demand

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) compiled smoking cessation behavior data among U.S. adults. Among their findings, some interesting facts were uncovered. These include:

  • 68% of adult smokers express a desire to quit smoking (2015)
  • Over half of smokers have made a recent attempt to quit smoking (2018)
  • Over 60% of adult smokers quit smoking in their lifetime (2018)
  • Over 31% of smokers have used counseling or medication in an attempt to quit (2015)

Cigarette Smoking Increased During the COVID-19 Pandemic

According to a report from USA Today, cigarette sales increased and fewer individuals sought help quitting during the midst of the COVID-19 Pandemic. This is just one of the addictions that increased during the pandemic. Forbes also reported that drug overdoses increased in the United States during the pandemic. The Mayo Clinic published an article about the increase of alcohol sales and increased risk of alcoholism during the pandemic as well.

As substance addiction increases, the demand for safe cessation methods will likely increase alongside it. Pharmaceutical manufacturers will have a unique opportunity to meet these consumers at a time of great need.

What Kind of Nicotine is Used in Gummies?

Nicotine gummies do not use nicotine taken from tobacco. Instead, they use a synthetic alternative aptly called “tobacco-free nicotine,” or TFN for short. Unlike natural nicotine, TFN has no taste, odor, or impurities associated with tobacco. This makes it a perfect active ingredient for creating smoking cessation gummies.

How Do You Add Nicotine to Gummies?

In the context of gummy manufacturing, nicotine would be considered an active ingredient. Active ingredients are added to the gummy mixture (called a “slurry”) during the latter half of the first phase of the gummy manufacturing process: Cooking.

In case you need a refresher on gummy manufacturing, here’s how the cooking phase of the process goes:

Part 1: Creating the Slurry

During the cooking phase, the base ingredients are first preheated in a kettle. The mixture melts down into a semi-liquid state called a slurry. Once the desired temperature and solids percentage are reached, the slurry is then transferred to a storage mixing tank.

Part 2: Adding the Final Touches

Once in the storage tank, the final ingredients are added that truly give the gummy its unique characteristics. These include ingredients like:

  • Coloring
  • Flavoring
  • Citric Acid (to adjust the pH and create a “gel” texture)
  • Active ingredients (in this case, nicotine would be the active ingredient)

Once these steps have been completed, the gummies are then moved to the next phase in the process: Depositing and Cooling.

Key Considerations During Nicotine Gummy Manufacturing

When you’re manufacturing your gummies, there are a number of key factors to account for to ensure that you are creating a finished product that meets your quality standards. These include:

Water Activity

A gummy’s level of water activity will directly affect its taste, texture, and shelf life. If there is too much water activity within the individual gummies, this can create an environment that encourages microbial growth and spoils the product sooner. During the quality control phase, gummies should be examined with a water activity meter to ensure that all levels are appropriate.

Cooking Temperatures

The temperature that you cook your gummies with directly affects the final properties. Ensure that there are no major temperature discrepancies between the base ingredients and your active ingredients. If the temperature threshold is too low on your active ingredients, you may want to consider modifying your process or seeking an alternative active with a higher temperature tolerance.
