Reach More Customers with Energy Gummies

Energy gummies are growing in demand among consumers. Why? Instead of drinking a cup of coffee or cracking open an energy drink from the convenience store, you can fuel your body with a sweet, chewable medium instead.

Today, we are going to cover some essential topics revolving around energy gummies. These include:

  • Size and scope of the energy supplement industry
  • Size and scope of the gummy pharmaceutical industry
  • Common types of energy supplements
  • Gummy manufacturing process
  • Gummy machines for manufacturing energy gummies

The Energy Supplement Industry is No Small Matter

Energy supplements can provide benefits to many different types of consumers. For example, an athlete may consume one for an extra boost during training or gametime. Energy supplementation can also help maintain greater alertness and concentration when in an important meeting or working on a big project.

Within this industry, energy drinks have a dominant presence. Mega-brands like Red Bull took the market by storm when it reached the United States in 1997. However, with many of these beverages come high sugar contents or large concentrations of zero-calorie chemical sweeteners that many consumers prefer to avoid.

Currently, the three largest energy supplement products, in descending order are energy drinks, gummies, and softgels. By 2030, the entire industry is projected to achieve a $25 billion market value

Gummies Are Big Business, Too

As we can see above, gummies hold a significant share of the energy supplement market. For manufacturers looking to expand their appeal to more consumers, adding gummies to your product line can expose you to another multi-billion dollar industry. By 2026, gummy vitamins are expected to exceed $9 billion in market size.

Let us safely assume that there are some crossover interests between gummy and energy supplement consumers. A single product appealing to both markets reach a customer segment with a combined projected market value exceeding $30 billion.

Common Types of Energy Supplements

Caffeine remains the most popular energy supplement in the American market. We drink it with our coffees, eat foods that contain it, and it is even found in many over-the-counter medications. For those that are looking for some other options, here are some other ingredients you can use to add an extra boost to your gummies:

Ashwagandha

A popular ingredient in ayurvedic medicine, ashwagandha has been shown to help people reduce stress. It is extracted from the root and berry of the ashwagandha plant, which is  commonly found in India, the Middle East, and certain regions of Africa.

Vitamin B12

Often found in animal proteins, vitamin B12 can help your body convert the food you eat into more efficient and usable energy. For people who choose to not eat meat like vegans and vegetarians, a gummy that can help supplement B12 intake can prove particularly appealing and valuable.

Creatine

Creatine is often associated with various fitness and workout supplements. It can help build muscle mass and provide an extra edge in the gym. However, it can also provide a short boost of energy to the body. For those looking for a quick pick-me-up before physical activity, creatine gummies can meet the need.

Coenzyme Q10

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is produced naturally by the body. It is an antioxidant also found in various animal meats as well as plant sources like nuts. The human body requires a healthy level of CoQ10 to stave off fatigue and energize itself.

CoQ10 deficiency, though rare, can result in various degrees of neurological and renal damage. To help treat the condition, the NIH advises CoQ10 supplements as a potential option for certain cases.

L-Carnitine

Our bodies produce L-carnitine through the amino acid lysine. Also available as a synthetic or nonsynthetic supplement, L-carnitine helps convert body fat into usable energy. It can also be found in many popular energy drinks and other over-the-counter energy-boosting products. This ingredient is also generally recognized as safe for human consumption without much or any controversy.

Green Tea

There are a number of green tea gummies on the market. Like coffee, green tea also contains caffeine. However, it also contains an amino acid called L-theanine which can also increase dopamine and alpha wave production in the human brain. Green tea also has less caffeine than coffee, which may prove a more suitable energy booster for those with a caffeine sensitivity.

Conduct Thorough Research

Many manufacturers tout various ingredients as energy boosting supplements. However, please note that these are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration like prescription medication. We always recommend conducting thorough research on any active ingredient you wish to add to your products.

Manufacturing Energy Gummies

Manufacturing an energy gummy supplement involves the same step as any other gummy vitamin product. We have covered the process in detail in a previous post, but we will also provide a quick overview here:

Phase 1: Cooking

During the initial cooking phase, ingredients are placed in a preheated kettle and remain there until the desired temperature is reached. The temperatures used during the cooking phase directly impacts the properties of the final product.

This initial mixture, called a slurry, is removed from the kettle and placed in a storage mixing tank after reaching the ideal temperature. After being placed in this tank, the manufacturer adds the final ingredients.

These final ingredients often include colors, flavors, citric acid, and active ingredients. At this point during the first phase, you would add your desired energy-boosting supplement.

Phase 2: Depositing and Cooling

The slurry is then transferred through heated pipes to a hopper on the depositor machine. At this point, the depositor will place a desired amount of the mixture into the intended molds.

Molds should be chilled and sprayed with oil. Along with Teflon coating, this pretreatment process will allow for more efficient cooling and prevent sticking.

Once deposited, the molds travel through a chilling tunnel. This helps solidify the slurry into the desired shape and become fully formed individual gummies.

Phase 3: Coating and Quality Control

The third and final phase of manufacturing energy gummies contains two stages: coating and quality control. Coatings are optional, but they can be used to enhance flavor and appearance while also preventing sticking in the package.

Regarding quality control, every manufacturer will implement their own quality control process. However, measuring the water activity levels of your gummy products is the most important aspect. Excess water activity can lead to poor consistency, shorter shelf life, and promote microbial growth, among many other issues.

Use the Right Gummy Manufacturing Equipment

To effectively manufacture energy gummies at scale, you need the right equipment to meet demand. Some traits you should look for in the best machines include:

Batch Capabilities

Can your gummy manufacturing equipment handle your batch size needs? As you scale your operations, you need machinery that can meet these demands. Additionally, the machine should also be able to produce a successful batch within a desirable time frame.

Redundancy Efficiency

If you are manufacturing gummies during all business hours, you need equipment that can handle redundant tasks. Machines that frequently break down will halt your operations with time-consuming repairs.

Ease of Maintenance

Equipment cleanliness has a direct impact on product safety and quality. Your machine should be easy to clean and maintain.

Consistent Product Quality

Don’t let your manufacturing process become a guessing game. High-quality gummy equipment should be able to handle all phases of your production cycle without it affecting the end result.

Production Floor-Friendly Size

Smaller gummy equipment setups will produce smaller batches. Larger ones can handle larger quantities, but they compete for more floor space. You want to find a machine capable of handling your batch sizes without taking away from the rest of your operations.

Reliable Quality Control Equipment

A water activity meter is any gummy manufacturer’s best friend when it comes to quality control. Using a reliable WAM can allow you to accurately measure the quality of your finished product. This way, your chances of shipping out defective goods is greatly reduced.
